Business English internship Program ( Work Experience Program)

 There are two main components to the program: English Learning and Work Practicum. Typically, the student will complete the language learning component, followed by the practicum experience.

In the English Learning component, the students will:

o    Expand work-related vocabularies

o    Improve and consolidate essential reading and writing skills

o    Communicate effectively using formal writing styles

o    Increase conversational fluency- improve clarity in speaking and accuracy in listening

o    Acquire knowledge on business related topics, such as current events, world economy, and local job market

o    Learn effective strategies for public speaking, negotiation and persuasion

After successfully completing the English Learning component, the student will begin internship practicum at a local company. UBridge College will recommend different internship opportunities to students, depending on individual English proficiency and preferences.

During work practicum, the student has many opportunities to utilize what s/he has learned in class, and apply those skills to the workplace.

Admission Requirements

UBridge College will provide English Language Assessment to students at the beginning of the program, to determine individual’s proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. According to the assessment result, UBridge College will recommend classes at different levels:

Beginner Level: Canadian Language Benchmark Level 1&2          

Intermediate Level: Canadian Language Benchmark Level 3&4    

Advanced Level 1:  Canadian Language Benchmark Level 5&6      

Advanced Level 2:  Canadian Language Benchmark Level 7           

Program Structure:

1. Language Learning Component (In-Class Instructions):

The students will be engaged in English as Second Language class, with 25 hours of instruction per week. The course will focus on the following topics:

1. Business Reading, Writing & Grammar:

o   Expand business & work related vocabularies

o   Consolidate writing skills- to communicate effectively using formal English; introduce writing formats for cover letters, resumes, invitations, business letters, memos, and reports

o   Current events: gain understanding of local industries and business environment; increase awareness of World economic trend, and its influence on the local job market

2. Workplace Conversation:

o   Increase conversational fluency- improve pronunciation and listening skills

o   Expand topics for workplace conversation- include marketing, tourism, global trade, job search etc.

o   Public speaking- learn effective strategies for organizing and delivering speeches

o   Workplace etiquette & Canadian culture

3. Job Skills :

o   Search and apply for jobs effectively using various resources

Mock interviews- practice listening and answering employer’s questions in an interview situation

Work Practium

During work practicum, the students will have the opportunities to utilize what they have learned in class, and apply those skills to the workplace. UBridge College will arrange work practicum for students at local companies, typically after the students have completed the In-Class learning component.

Most of our collaborating employers are in the service industry. The jobs include restaurant staff, food court attendant, and counter helper. To be able to interact with the customers and co-workers, basic reading, writing and conversation skills are usually required for these positions.

UBridge College will recommend different internship opportunities to students depending on individual English proficiency and preferences. Students may work up to the same amount of time as the In-Class instructional hours.

During internship practicum, the student is required to submit a Student Practicum Reflection Report every month. In the report, the student will reflect on his/her practicum experience:

o   Application of  English skills at workplace

o   Interaction with employer, co-workers and customers

o   Reflection on Canadian culture & experiences

o   Self-evaluation on English improvement/ work experience

UBridge College will provide feedback to the student every month. The responses presented in the report will be reviewed and used for final student evaluation..

On-going Placement Support

UBridge College will continue to provide services to students who wish to continue their study in Canada, even after they have completed the BEIP in-class component. The students are welcomed to use the following services provided by UBridge College:

TOEFL-IBT Reading and Listening Exam

  • Students are welcomed to use the TOEFL exam bank for reading and listening assessment
  • The exam will take about 2 hours to complete
  • Registration fee- $20 per session. UBridge College will provide feedback on the test score

 

Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Registration

  • UBridge College is a designated agent for SAIT
  • UBridge College will assist students with SAIT program registration process
