Jazzy Jargons

This allows for general conversation, which can include discussion of Canadian culture, the explanation and use of idioms, and some practical, everyday English. The students can (and should!) tell the teacher what they would like to learn, practice and discuss. Some classes may have occasional outings.

Sitcom English (J.J)

This module uses situation comedies (TV ‘sitcoms’), like Seinfeld, Frazier or Friends, to learn about common idioms, casual speech patterns and everyday vocabulary. The sitcoms can generate discussion about North American cultural beliefs and practices. And they’re fun to watch!!!

English through Music & Drama (J.J)

You can gain a lot of confidence in your ability to express yourself in English by taking this fun and very active course. This course uses the techniques of acting and singing to help you with pronunciation, clarity, and self-confidence. You’ll find your creative, imaginative side. No one sits around quietly on the sidelines in this class!

Listen Up! (J.J)

This module focuses on the problems of communicating when we can't see the other person, such as speaking to someone over the telephone. Students will exercise their listening skills to guess context and emotional content, while listening to song lyrics, radio news or taped conversations. Students will also have the opportunity to practice techniques for initial job interviews.

Film Club (J.J)

This is a module for movie fans. Students will view great movies to spark great conversations and expand their vocabulary. The movie list includes thought provoking hits from directors Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Michael Moore and more! Discussion & Debate (J.J) This course uses short readings to generate discussion and debate over various issues (often very controversial issues!). We may use a variety of methods to discuss the issues: discussion circles allowing people to share their viewpoint, traditional win-lose debates, learning to examine and argue different sides of the same issue. This course will require a fairly high-level of speaking skills. You will have to do some preparation for this outside of class.
